A few days ago, two of Nintendo s North American offices closed their doors. One was in Redwood City, California - and shortly thereafter, Toronto s office, Ontario, followed suit. About 100 employees were dismissed from the only Redwood plant, including senior vice-president of sales and marketing: Nick Chavez.
It is unlikely that the ongoing game development efforts are affected by this decision. The closures mainly concerned marketing services. So, even if the games can continue their development cycle normally, the presence of interesting announcements could take a shot.
The objective of this decision is to consolidate the resources, according to a Nintendo of America, and published by Kotaku:
The headquarters of Nintendo of America is located in Redmond, Wa, and Vancouver, British Columbia. We are moving more from our employees and our operations in these headquarters and we ll close small satellite offices in Toronto, Ontario, and Redwood City, California over time. Devon Pritchard, Executive Vice President, Commercial Affairs and Publishers Relations for Nintendo of America (NOA), will assume the Interim Sales, Marketing and Communications Department after Nick Chavez departure. Ms. Pritchard will supervise the strategy and execution of sales, marketing and communications in the United States and Canada.
According to several sources, other attempts to obtain comments received no response. There are many reasons why a company like this could close its doors, but it seems unlikely that we receive a concrete answer as to what exactly happened. With a little luck, those who have lost their work should be able to find a job elsewhere - it did not seem that anyone who left in bad terms (to our knowledge), and Nintendo is a fairly big booster of CV.
